Soloist Gill uses volume and articulation to take us on an expressive journey, but the background singers feel muted and rigid rather than free to sing with the fluid dynamics and tempo necessary for this ballad. Yebba I heard you coming at a quarter to three You close the door and lay down next to me But then I heard you say her name when you sleep Your dirty. I miss the small swells and especially the forward motion on long tones involved in creating My Mind's arc. I Im bout to lose my My mind, my mind, my mind Im bout to lose my My mind, my mind I think about you all the time You cant even look me dead in the eyes Her love is strong, she got you. If I shoot him in the stomach Then he’s hurting on my dime And if I shoot him in the head, then he’s dead and he’s livin’ on my mind My reflection in the mirror Her perfection in his eyes I’m a danger to myself I run from twelve And take my rage across the county line. However, the track rests too comfortably at a middle volume and an almost plodding tempo. Encore sounds best when supporting the soloist lyrically with large harmonic stacks, and arranger Patrick Dunnevant supplies many of these moments to showcase the ensemble. However, at times their diction, particularly on syllables that close to "m", could use more depth to fully resonate in their vocal chambers. Gill skillfully maneuvers between timbres and shades of color to accentuate the lyrics and the narrative arc. The control in both head and belting upper registers especially impresses. My mind, my mind, my mind Bout to lose my My mind, my mind I think about you all the time, oh, oh, hey You cant even look me dead in the eyes Her love is strong, she got you hypnotized You say you love me, but I know its a lie When I work so hard to keep you satisfied I, I, I Im bout to lose my I, oh, I am, I Im bout to lose my My mind. ![]() ![]() Encore, a high school group at Ensworth School in Nashville, Tennessee, produces a version of My Mind by YEBBA that is highly polished, perhaps slightly too much.Ĭorrina Gill shines on this solo feature, singing with technique and expression beyond most high schoolers' years.
